Two récent plein air studies at Hythe

These are two small 220 x 160 Jullian Pochade plain air studies recently

Painting and canoeing for the day, when I was tired of one I did the other. My son Barnaby was with me enjoying the first trip in the boats for 2012.

The top image is a little way from the Hythe Imperial towards the Fisherman's beach. Painted in just over an hour. Crowds of people enjoying the sunny day, filled the scene with colour.

The lower image, painted at the end of the day, was further along towards fisherman's beach. A couple of dog walkers entered the scene, and found their way into my painting.

My new one man show at Haddon Galleries in Torquay, starting tomorrow for two weeks.
So if you are around and want to take a closer look please do not hesitate to drop by.
Sadly my commitments have not allowed me to be there in person on this occasion, but I know the owners Fiona and Paul Haddon will be delighted to show the work.
If you see please drop me a message as to what you thought.

This was taken by my son Barnaby, whilst I was painting a near nocturne well a 25 minute study on the beach at Hythe the other night, 8.55 to 9.20 working fast and furiously to capture the rolling clouds and a rapidly setting sun, with a force 8 wind in my ear.
Barnaby has a natural flare with images, and I feel will go far with his photography.

He has taken some others which I really like and will post here soon.

Sunset over Fisherman's Beach
Oil on panel 12 x 16

One very recent image of the beach near to my studio in Hythe. It depicts the Fisherman's Beach looking towards the famous Napoleonic forts of Wellingtons defences known as Martello Towers. This is one of my favourite places to paint plein air, and I have several recent works to share with you, including the study for this painting

Tiger Portrait 12 x 16 oil

Just finishd this painting which started life a couple of weeks ago as a Big Cat demo at my workshop in my studio. I liked it a lot so spent a little more time on it to bring it to a conclusion

This is a lot more fresh and spontaneous than previously painting and I enjoyed the process of painting it.

'The Grey'

20" x 28" Oil on Natural Canvas.

This is one of my more recent works and a long overdue subject matter of the Grey Wolf.
My son Barnaby, who is so interested in Wolves, inspired this canvas.

The wolf was one of several studied at the West Yellowstone National Park refuge where I visited a few years back with artist friends Mat Hillier, Lindsey Foggett and John Mullane.
We painted our way around Yellowstone.

This work will shortly be available through my one man show at Haddon Gallery
Torquay starting June 16th for two weeks.

Sunday, May 20, 2012

This is a very recent painting and will be one image that will feature at my up and coming one man show at the Haddon Gallery in Torquay.

This is a oil on canvas measuring 18 x 24
'Golden Majesty'

This was concieved as a demo on one of  my workshops earlier this year on an African theme.
I do hope that you like it.

Feel free to leave a comment or two.
 'Tala'

Just a sneak peak and preview of how the new book might be looking as it takes shape.
I have just had a second proof reading and seen the colour proofs of the new title being launched by Search Press in early August 2012. Tala is the latest puppy to join Catherine and I at home. she is such a delight and inseparable from our older 3 year old  GSD, 'Khan'.

I took this image the first day she arrived home and painted the image as fast as I could as the dealine for the book was only days away at the time. She fitted in well with the brief and completed my task of 9 new paintings.

Learn to Paint Dogs and Puppies
Due out 12th August 2012.

So many new events at my studio, these include new workshop titles and dates going into the second half of 2102.

In addition there are a few places remaining for my tuition on a weekly basis, Monday Tuesday and Wednesday sessions.

A life session on Thursday evening is growing and the 2.5 hours of work is well appreciated by those attending.

I have so many wonderful ideas for the future, and so little time to fully impliment any. So forgive me if some take a little longer to appear than I would like.

All the new dates and workshop titles can be found on my website at

www.paulappsfineart.com

My latest workshop last Saturday was a great day. Painting Big Cats in oils and acrylic.
It was well attended and all enjoyed the event. The feedback was fantastic and I shall be posting some on the website very soon.

Students enjoyed my 90 minute demonstration of a Tigers head, closely followed by a well deserved Fish'n'Chip lunch.

We were all flagging when 5pm came around all too fast. Even so everyone worked hard and took some positive points and a painting away with them.

Looking forward to my next workshop 'From Charcoal to Chalk'

This can be found on my website under the studio/workshop tag

£80 all day, all materials and a hot lunch....

come and have some fun

Long overdue post I guess

It has been such a long while since my last post, indeed I started a new one linked within my website. I have now abandoned that one and linked this my older more established blog in its place, again from my website.
So I do hope that those of you who followed my progress before will follow me once more. Over the coming days and even weeks I have so much to tell you all, so please pop back to my site and check out the blog posts from time to time.
Best wishes
